The notion of Mentoring tends to infer a learning relationship between a senior person and a more junior employee. For this reason the Devon Learning Network offers Critical Friendships as a further option in learning from another person. Like Mentoring, a Critical Friendship creates an alliance between two people for the purpose of development.

Julie Hay defines a Developmental Alliance as: a relationship between equals in which one or more of those involved is enabled to: increase awareness, identify alternatives, initiate action to develop themselves.

A Critical Friendship could be used between Health Practitioners and Social Care Practitioners to understand how each others' organisations function. They may use this Alliance to share particular expertise or Best Practice.

The word Critical means key and crucial and Friendship donates the intended quality of the relationship.
